Biblical Parallels
Sowing Seeds ~ Tending Soil ~ Waiting for Growth ~ Watering with the Word ~ Reaping a Harvest
Throughout the bible we can see the significance of connecting seeds, planting, growth, life, transformation, harvest, and renewal as powerful symbols of faith, hope, and new life in the Kingdom of God. Just like microgreens grow from small seeds into life-giving food, the good news of the Gospel begins as a small seed planted in the heart and it grows into a new life in Jesus. The seed is the word of God. Jesus often taught meaningful sermons by using farming parables because it shows how God is at work in our lives to help us "bear good fruit". Read the parable of the farmer scattering seed in Mark 4.

Broccoli carries powerful spiritual
symbolism. Broccoli is actually a cluster of unopened flower buds that is packed tightly together and its tree like form can symbolize wisdom, potential, abundance and fruitfulness. Each small bud is part of a greater whole, which can speak of the body of Christ - many members, yet one body, each with purpose and value. The broccoli plant teaches us to stay well rooted, to grow upward in faith and to flourish in community.
In scripture, trees often symbolize wisdom, life and righteous living. Broccoli's form invites us to reflect on growing in wisdom, branching out in understanding, and being rooted in the Word like a tree planted by streams of water (Psalm 1:3).

Purple radish grows beneath the surface of the ground, developing where no one can see it. The powerful plant reflects the importance of inner spiritual growth. This reminds us of something very important, that what God grows in secret - your faith, your character, your integrity, and obedience, matter more to him than your outward appearances.
When you harvest a radish, you pull it out of the soil and bring it into the light. This demonstrates how God brings us out of darkness and into the light in a new life through Jesus. This reflects the gift of salvation and transformation. We have new identity in Jesus, our royal identity as heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven.
Radish has a very strong and spicy taste. This can show us that knowing the truth of God can be strong and piercing but is ultimately good and purifying.
"For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. nothing in all creation is hidden from God." Hebrews 4:12-13

Early Christians used amaranth as a symbol for immortality and everlasting life. Red Garnet Amaranth has a deep red/purple color that can symbolize blood, sacrifice and covenant. Christ shed his blood on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, which gives us eternal life in heaven. This sacrifice was given willingly, freely and with great love for ALL mankind.
"For God so Loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, so that whoever believes in Jesus shall not perish but shall have everlasting life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to SAVE the world through Him." John 3:16

Kale is a hardy, humble plant that grows well in tough conditions and not requiring much care. In scripture, God often values what is lowly and overlooked. Kale's humble nature reflects God's preference for spiritual simplicity, endurance, and faithfulness over extravagance.
Kale is often seen as a "superfood" and can be linked to themes of restoration, vitality, and healing - gifts that come from God. Kale thrives in cold and difficult seasons, becoming sweeter after a frost. This resilience can be symbolic of spiritual growth through trials.
"When troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing." James 1:2-4

The pea plant belongs to the legume family and their growth patterns, nourishing qualities and humble form carry strong symbolic meaning for provision, humility, faith and spiritual perseverance. Peas are simple yet nutrient dense, sustaining life even in difficult times. Legumes were known and valued in ancient times. Peas, like lentils, represent God's provision through modest means. This reminds us that God meets our needs, even in simplicity. The pea plant reminds us that great spiritual worth often lies in what the world sees as small or common.
Peas grow in pods and on vines that cling and climb, needing support. They can symbolize our dependence on Christ.
"Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing." John 15:5

Purple cabbage has a color, structure and growth pattern that has strong symbolic meaning. The color purple is associated with royalty and identity in God. Even ordinary everyday believers have a royal identity in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Purple cabbage is made of many tightly wrapped layers, which can represent our spiritual growth as believers. God refines us by peeling back each layer as he transforms our mind and hearts. Each layer demonstrates how God works deep within us over a long period of time, shaping our character and revealing what is inside of each of us. Those tightly wrapped layers also demonstrate protection and covering, reminding us that God is our protection and our refuge, he covers us with His presence.
"God is our refuge and strength, always present and ready to help in times of trouble." Psalm 46:1

Sunflowers are a beautiful plant that has a posture that is always seeking the light. It grows towards the sun, and its face looks to the heavens. It bears much fruit (seeds) that feeds the birds of the air and the animals on the ground.
The sunflower is a strong symbol of living a life that is intentionally growing towards God every day, seeking His presence and guidance.
The sunflower depends on the sun to grow, and we depend on God as our source of life, truth and strength.
The sunflower teaches us that we can only grow to our fullest potential when we stay connected to God's light. Sunflowers consistently follow the sun and that reflects steadfast faith, loyalty and devotion.
Sunflowers are beautiful, joyful, open and radiant. When we allow the Holy Spirit to dwell within our hearts, our countenance will radiate that light from within.
"I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you will not have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life." John 8:12
