Christmas Morning

A hearty thank you to all the residents of Marshfield who donated goods to Sowing Seeds, the Food Pantry, Community Christmas, Kiwanis and other area outreach organizations. At this very moment your efforts are bringing big smiles and great joy to kids (and adults) of town.

At Sowing Seeds we continue to see many families struggling year round through this recession. Fortunately, we also see an outpouring of love, compassion and assistance from a very generous community. Thanks for your help. We hope you are having a peaceful Christmas.

Thankful for So Many and So Much

On Thanksgiving Day we thought of all of our wonderful volunteers who help us throughout the year. Some work directly with our neighbors when helping with transportation, the Clothing Bank or one-to-one, offering guidance with more intricate issues. Many others work behind the scenes making calls, writing thank you notes, offering professional services, tending to our building or many of the other needs of our neighbors.

Our "Friends" also came to mind, with their spirit, fund raising and support. We are blessed to live in a community which has so many compassionate people. We are blessed to be part of an organization which knows how to convert that compassion to effective action. We are blessed to be in the presence of people courageous enough to say "I need help." We learn so much from them as they steady their lives and progress to independence, health, stability and happiness.

Fashionable Thanks!

Congratulations & thank you, Friends of Sowing Seeds! What a beautiful, fun Fashion Show with a great outcome for a wonderful organization! Thanks to Kristin, Ellen & Jackie for their outstanding leadership & hard work. Thanks to all the volunteers, your families, & the generous vendors & sponsors. Thanks to our Sowing Seeds volunteers for your great work all year 'round. You make a big difference in many lives.

Grateful for our Volunteers and "Friends"

Look at what our good Friends of Sowing Seeds are up to once again. Oh, the good that's done with the fruits of their labor and generosity! Thanks everyone. Your support - in time, talent, goods, clothing, cars, rides, service or gifts through the Fashion Show - does a world of good for our neighbors in need. Thank you all!

Cars Needed by Our Neighbors

The Sowing Seeds directors met this week. Not to sound like a broken record, but we're still *really* busy. Many people are still out of work or under-employed. Even those who have found employment still need a hand "digging out from under." We always need volunteers and resources. Right now we also need cars in great working condition for needy individuals and families.

If have a car you'd consider donating please call 781.837.3337. THANK YOU!

Back to Work?

We wish sending people back to work would be as easy to schedule as sending children back-to-school is. Many parents are still out of work. Their kids need school supplies; their parents need rides to appointments. Call if you're from Marshfield & need help. Call or write if you're able to give help or time: Box 1001, Marshfield, MA 02050; 781.837.3337. Please remember, we are 100% volunteer. It might take a little bit of time for us to get back to you but we will.

We hope you and your family will have a great school year and a great work year, too.

Bare Essentials

Our greatest asset is our people. We're 100% volunteer run. Of course, we need some money to provide our services and keep the lights on. Yet we'll never ask for that in public ;-). Underwear, however, we will ask for. We will beg for it. We need packages of new underwear and socks. Our neighbors need them.

Thank you.

Very Basic Needs

Plain and simple: We need packages of new underwear for the people we serve, young and old, male and female. Yes, we even determined that we prefer boxers over briefs. Imagine a board meting discussing that? We serve many teenage boys; we had to.

"Back" to School

Backpacks, backpacks. backpacks. Many Marshfield shool children need a new backpack to head back to school. Can you help them out?

Cleaning Closets?

If you have some spare *plastic* hangers in your closet we could put them to good use! We're looking for personal donations of plastic hangers. We're also looking for a retail or wholesale source willing to donate a large supply for use in our Clothing Bank. Plastic hangers are easier to work with, neater and more appealing when then are a uniform style.
If you can suggest a supplier we'd love to know. (Unfortunately, we cannot accept any wire ones.) Thanks!

Since inception the Sowing Seeds intake committee has responded to over 5,300 calls. A great many more people - and families - have been helped by our Clothing Bank. Thanks for helping us to help them.

Volunteer Drivers Needed

As the summer residents move to town many Marshfield residents head out on vacation or seek a change in climate, leaving the town's volunteer base greatly diminished. The population of neighbors-in-need feels the impact greatest, as the least number of social services are available during summer months.
Our community has an urgent need for drivers to transport Marshfield residents to medical appointments in Boston. Please call (781) 837.3337 to volunteer. Your help is greatly appreciated. Many older, disabled or chronically ill Marshfield... residents are unable to receive the medical attention they need without the help of Sowing Seeds volunteers.

The Clothing Bank at Sowing Seeds also needs clothing for girls and boys clothing for sizes 2 through 6X, packaged new socks and underwear for men, women and children, and gift certificates to Marshalls and Payless Shoe . All clothing should be seasonal and in new or nearly new condition. Other area gift certificates would also be appreciated. Sowing Seeds, located on Rt. 139 at the corner of Plain and School Streets (in the former First Baptist Church), is open to distribute clothing and to accept donations on Thursday and Saturday mornings from 10:00 AM to 12 noon. Volunteers are needed for many Sowing Seeds services, including the Clothing Bank. Clothing Bank volunteers are asked to help for two hours, once per month.

If you are in need of other services provided by Sowing Seeds, or if you are able to volunteer your time, services or donate a vehicle (in very good mechanical condition), please also call to speak with a volunteer. Economic conditions have left a greater number of Marshfield residents in need of a helping hand
than ever before. Our local needs are still great. Please consider assisting however you can. Each year Sowing Seeds serves over 200 families; approximately 70% of those families have children who are assisted in addition to the adult members of their families.

Sowing Seeds is a 100% volunteer, ecumenical, outreach ministry that provides a broad range of services to Marshfield residents. It was founded by Marshfield volunteers and serves only Marshfield residents. It is not affiliated with any other national organization. Additional donations may be mailed to PO Box 1001, Marshfield, MA 02050. In addition to this website (www.sowingseedsofhope.net) updated information is available at Facebook's Sowing Seeds page:

Memorial Day Gratitude

At Sowing Seeds we serve locally and freely. We're able to do so because of those who have served so valiantly to protect us all. This weekend, and every time we salute the flag, we salute you and thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Sowing Seeds is Still Very Busy

Just because I've been kind of quiet here on website (and Facebook page) doesn't mean the volunteers at Sowing Seeds haven't been busy! In print the economic indicators show the recession slowing. In reality, if your family has been impacted you might still need help & your recession is still very real. Many people are still underemployed-or they were recently. Our volunteers work miracles to help our Marshfield neighbors in need.
Please remember Sowing Seeds if you have time to give a ride to a neighbor (through us), a professional service or trade to share, in season clothing in new to nearly new condition, or loose change in your pockets.

We are representatives from the many churches in town, working together to make a difference in our neighbors' lives and the spirit of our community. Working together, we can-and have-accomplished so much.

If you live in Marshfield and you need some guidance call us at (781) 837-3337. A volunteer will call you back.

(Please don't call us for emergencies. In those cases always dial 9-1-1. We hope you’ll never have that need.)

Congratulations, Susan West!

Great news for Marshfield. Susan West has been named Citizen of the Year! Great honor for a remarkable person. Thank you, Susan, and thank you Mariner and Chamber for recognizing her great work.

Warm Wishes for Your New Year

May the hope we feel in our hearts today be realized in our actions and dreams this year. May we not struggle. May our neighbors not struggle. May peace, hope and love prevail. "Peace." "Hope." "Love." Words sometimes used loosely but heartfelt and implemented so wonderfully by our volunteers: May each of you find peace in your heart and love in your home and community. Happy New Year to you all.

Too Cold to be Homeless

What a horrible night to be homeless! We are so grateful to our volunteers and the hard workers at other organizations who prevent and rectify homelessness. State resources have been drastically cut, impacting many state and private services. If you know of anyone in Marshfield in need of a home please have that person contact us. It's too cold to be outside. It's too cold to be facing the struggle alone.

Tune In!

We are generously being given some air time at WATD 95.9 FM this morning (12/26) between 8:30 and 10:30 am. We'll most likely be sharing it with other local charities. Tune it on the radio or online at: http://www.959watd.com/

Volunteers with Spirit Year Round

Some of our volunteers are fast asleep preparing for a busy day in the Clothing Bank tomorrow. Other volunteers are resting well knowing that they have offered effective guidance and targeted assistance to families suffering from personal or economic issues. Still other Sowing Seeds volunteers gave rides to elderly neighbors or chronically ill residents to critical appointments this week. Our volunteers don't wait for Christmas to share their spirit. They live it all year long. For that we are all very grateful.

Santa will help us collect coats

Santa Claus is coming to Marshfield and helping us to collect warm coats, blankets, gift cards and packages of new underwear. The Marshfield Chamber of Commerce has been busy planning the Holiday Festival of Lights for Sunday, December 6, downtown (Shaw's parking lot, near Papa Gino's and the Post Office.) Sowing Seeds volunteers will be there from 1:00 to 4:30 pm. Hope to see you there.

Santa also will be there with holiday carolers strolling around the square, pony rides, a model train set, a trackless train, face painting a kid's DJ, kids prizes and a jingle bell pass, high school carolers and more. Yes, it's free!

Thanks, Chamber, it sounds like fun! Thanks also for providing an opportunity for Sowing Seeds and the Food Pantry to help our neighbors this winter. The Food Pantry will be collecting unexpired cans of food. Sowing Seeds will be accepting warm coats (in new or nearly new condition), blankets, gift certificates to local merchants, and packages of new underwear to distribute to Marshfield's neediest families. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to share some basics and some holiday cheer.

Thank you all for your continued interest and support.

Wow! Thank You, Friends!

WOW! Hats off to the Friends of Sowing Seeds! What a great event they planned and hosted tonight. Thanks also to the Marshfield Country Club for their help in the planning and hosting of this Fashion Show. This team of "Friends" volunteers did more than raise money for Sowing Seeds. They raised awareness and our spirits.

Thanks also to the models, the vendors, shopkeepers and stores that provided the clothing, floral, hair and makeup stylists, the many contributors of the silent auction items and the live auction items. Several volunteers also enlisted the time of helpful spouses. This was a huge undertaking, pulled off with such grace!

Tonight's event would not have been successful if it weren't for the supporters, neighbors and contributors who showed up. Your presence fuels our commitment. Your bids and contributions will directly help Marshfield families struggling to get back on their feet. With your support we can help more people. Now even more families can and will get on their feet again.

A special thanks to the children who modeled. If the children didn't melt your heart you probably were out of the room when they entered. They couldn't have been more adorable. They represented what we wish for every family in town: to be well loved, well fed, well clothed and well cared for.

Thank you, Friends, for your hard work, great publicity, great fund raising and great spirit. You've infused us with an even greater commitment to help our neighbors in need. We are deeply grateful to the Friends’ Fashion Show committee: Fashion Show Co-Chair Ellen Goldenson, Fashion Show Co-Chair Jacqueline Egan, Donna Adams, Donna Brown, Tricia Bethay, Kristin Egan Dewey, Gail Dwyer, Ellen House, Kim Kulp, Lorraine Rayberg, and Carol Yaroschouk.

Last, but not least, a heartfelt thanks to the emcee and WDHD reporter, Linda Ergas. Boy or girl, her baby is going to have a tough act to follow! Linda did a spectacular job emceeing the Fashion Show and live auction. Thanks for contributing your time and talent to our cause, Linda. Welcome to Sowing Seeds!

Hats off to you all!

Of course, the night should not pass without another nod of thanks to our committed volunteers who help our neighbors all year 'round. Without them we have no Sowing Seeds. Without them many more families would still be struggling and alone in their challenges. The volunteers who give their time and talents are the backbone of Sowing Seeds. Another thanks to you tonight, good friends.

A Warm Coat and a Blankie

Brrr.. It's chilly out! In many homes it’s also chilly in.

The Sowing Seeds board met this week. Hearing that the recession is ending brings us some hope. Our educated guess is that the recovery hasn’t reached Marshfield: We’re still seeing longer lines and longer lists of people looking for our assistance. Blankets and warm coats would be greatly appreciated. If you know of anyone who has extra blankets in nearly new condition please suggest Sowing Seeds to them. We are expecting an unusually strong demand for them.

Coats, hats, gloves and mittens also would be greatly appreciated. The warmer the better. We serve all ages, genders and sizes. We even know of one Sowing Seeds volunteer whose long johns are on, and there to stay until Memorial Day!

We hope this winter is kind to you.

Teaching Care and Compassion

A great troop of Brownies, their leaders and Moms stopped by today for a special tour. Hats off to the leaders and parents who arranged this! The kids took great interest in the good that Sowing Seeds does and were eager to help us (during these off hours at the Clothing Bank). A seed was planted to raise another gener...ation of caring volunteers. Thanks for exposing them to some goodness in the world.

A Good Start to the School Year

Due to the generosity and thoughtfulness of the people in town, many Marshfield children have headed back to school with updated clothing that fits them, new backpacks filled with new school supplies, and even some crayons and coloring books for our littlest residents. Hope is in the air!

Meanwhile, there’s still work to be done. Summer brought no let up in the numbers of people seeking our guidance and assistance. The recession may be nearing an end but a full recovery will take more time. We are currently in need of fall and winter clothing. Without extra storage, resources and more volunteers we cannot accept any spring or summer clothing right now. Yet, we’ll gladly accept seasonal items!

Store gift cards are a big help to us. They give us the flexibility of shopping for specific needs as they arise. Local merchants include Marshalls, Payless Shoes, Kohl’s and Stop & Shop. Basic needs don’t change much. If you’re shopping for new underwear or socks know that we’d appreciate your size, too. Our needs come in all sizes. Fortunately, so do our supporters and helpers!

Thanks for giving many kids the hope of a fresh start. Thank you for caring and sharing.

The Bare Necessities

Two regular groups met at Sowing Seeds this week: The Board of Directors and the Intake Committee. Sadly, none reported a let up in the number of local individuals and families really struggling through hard times. Although our services are vast, and our wish list for goods and staples is long, the greatest need we have right now is for packages of new underwear and new socks.

If you purchased a package of new underwear or a pair of socks in the wrong size, please consider donating them to Sowing Seeds this month. All sizes and genders are welcomed and urgently needed. Onesies, toddlers, kids, teens, women’s, men’s -- if you have them and they are new (packaged or tagged) -- we know families that can use them right now. The friends and supporters of Sowing Seeds have been extremely generous with their donations of other goods to Sowing Seeds. To date, however, underwear, has not been a highly donated item. Let’s show our neighbors in need that we care about their basic needs, and see how much brand new underwear we can get donated before July 4th.

In lieu of packages of new socks and new underwear, gift cards to local merchants (especially Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Kohl’s, Payless Shoes and Stop & Shop) are urgently needed and greatly appreciated.

Thanks for helping us with our neighbors’ bare necessities!

Color their world with hope

At Sowing Seeds we usually focus on meeting the most basic need of our neighbors. Basics needs come in many different colors.

When a Mom or Dad visits our Clothing Bank with children in tow, it’s helpful to have an activity to occupy our littlest visitors so that their parent can find appropriately sized clothing for the family.

Nothing seems to soothe a restless toddler’s or child’s energy like a new box of crayons and a new coloring book. We are currently seeking donations of small boxes of crayons and coloring books to give to the children who visit Sowing Seeds. In addition to helping the Moms who visit us these items will be a little boost for the small children who are already experiencing a lot of stress in their young lives. Let’s color their world with blue, green, yellow, magenta, joy and hope.

If you see crayons and coloring books on sale, please consider purchasing them and donating them to Sowing Seeds during regular Clothing Bank hours, Thursday and Satrudays, from 10 am to 12 noon. We are located at 974 Plain Street (Route 139), Marshfield, Massachusetts, 02050. (Please remember that is not our mailing address. We receive mail at PO Box 1001, Marshfield, MA 02050.)

Thank you for helping us help our neighbors!

Household Repairs and Small Projects

A group of Marshfield men is launching a home repair service for small household projects. The group has organized to help the homebound, disabled, elderly, chronically ill and working poor in our community. These volunteers will receive qualified referrals from Sowing Seeds and the Marshfield Council on Aging. If you would like to volunteer, or if you need assistance with a household project, call Sowing Seeds at (781) 837.3337, or call the Marshfield Council on Aging at (781) 834.5581.

The economic downturn has greatly impacted many Marshfield families

When the Board of Directors for Sowing Seeds met this week it came as no surprise: Sowing Seeds has never been busier. Each month the Clothing Bank serves approximately 250 Marshfield families. Not only do the visiting families receive clothing, but also year ‘round assistance with back-to-school needs, budgetary guidance, compassionate listening and resource referrals. Reports from transportation co-ordinators and other intake volunteers show significantly greater demand for Sowing Seeds’ diverse services.

Sowing Seeds consists solely of volunteers and operates with private, local donations. If you’d like to give us a hand please write to PO Box 1001, Marshfield, MA 02050 or call: (781) 837.3337. A volunteer will return your call.

Currently, Sowing Seeds has a great demand for volunteer drivers who are willing to transport a neighbor to a Boston medical appointment.

Likewise, if you are a Marshfield resident and need a hand: You are not alone. Please call us. A volunteer will get back to you.

Basics needed: coats, blankets, hats, gloves, packages of new socks and new underwear

Sowing Seeds has a shortage of coats this year. The Clothing Bank at Sowing Seeds serves residents of Marshfield. Located at 974 Plain Street, the Clothing Bank is in the building that used to be the First Baptist Church. (It's at the corner of School Street and Rte. 139.)

New and nearly new clothing is distributed to individuals and families needing a helping hand. The hours are usually 10 am to 12 noon on Thursday and Saturday mornings. The volunteers are busier than ever. The need within Marshfield has never been this great since Sowing Seeds formed 15 years ago.

Thanks for considering your neighbors and passing along your gently used clothing. Packages of new socks and new underwear are also needed, as well as gift certificates to local discount stores (especially Marshalls, Kohl's and Payless Shoes), gas cards, and other staple goods. Hats, gloves, mittens and blankets are also needed.

Please note: If you want your donated clothing to be used locally, please do not place it in the bins by Sowing Seeds. Only clothing that is delivered to a volunteer during Clothing Bank hours is accepted for local use. Unfortunately, clothing that is left outside the door cannot be considered for Sowing Seeds to use. Please bring clean, wearable clothing to the volunteers during operating hours noted above.

Call 781.837.3337 if you need a hand, or if you can donate your time, treasure or talent. A volunteer will return your call.

Marshfield residents have been very supportive of one another. We trust the community will continue to help one another through these economically tough days. Let's hope there is less local need next year at this time. Meanwhile, many quiet miracles are worked here, week in and week out.

Back-to-school needs

As Marshfield parents and children prepare for another school year they face tremendous financial strain. Back-to-school clothing, escalated food costs and elevated fuel prices are just a few of the factors adding to budgetary stress. Historically, Marshfield residents have been very generous in helping several of our neighbors in need at the beginning of the school year. This fall there are many more children in need of our assistance, and we have never seen a level of need here that is this great.

Backpacks, pens, pencils, notebooks, paper and crayons are among the many items our children require. (Specific lists of other items may also be available on each Marshfield school’s website.) In addition to school supplies our Clothing Bank also distributes back-to-shool clothing. Packages of new underwear and gift certificates to local stores, including Marshalls, Kohl’s and Payless Shoes, are always in short supply.

Your charitable donations can be delivered on Thursday and Saturday mornings, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, or mailed to us at: Sowing Seeds, PO Box 1001, Marshfield, MA 02050.

(For additional “News & Needs” please click on “Sowing Seeds News Updates” to the right of your screen, or the “News and Needs” link sometimes on the top of this page. Your options may vary with the type of browser you’re using.)

Your donated clothing is put right to use

When you donate your in-season, gently worn clothing to us, your clothes are passed along to a local family in need.

At Sowing Seeds our volunteers carefully examine the clothing that is dropped off inside our building to see if it is in wearable condition. Each item is assessed: Is it something we would wear? Is it something we would give to a family member or friend to wear? If so, it is sorted by gender and size, and then displayed in our boutique-like setting, and given to a qualified local family in need. If not, we pass it along to other larger, regional non-profits to distribute in some fashion.

The primary goal of Sowing Seeds is to help local families get on their feet again. No one at Sowing Seeds earns a single cent. Your clothing doesn’t travel to reach its destination. It’s used right here, right now, by people who have a real and present need for clothing.

Donations of seasonal, laundered clothing, in new or nearly new condition can be delivered to our building on Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 12 noon. (Try to deliver before 11:4 5a.m. if you can.) Be sure to bring your clothing inside the building. Due to space constraints we cannot accept out-of-season clothing.

We can always use gift certificates to local merchants such as Marshall’s, Payless Shoes and Stop and Shop. We have a constant need for packages of new socks and underwear.

Our reward is knowing we have clad a local family, and that in the summer they have t-shirts, shorts, pants and sneakers, and during our winters their heads, bodies, hands and feet are kept warm and dry. They depend upon all of us to help them help themselves.

Thanks for helping your neighbors and community. If you are in need of clothing, please stop by and speak with one of our volunteers during Clothing Bank hours. We are happy to discreetly help you.

Honor a loved one with a Celebration or Memorial Card

Sowing Seeds Celebration and Memorial Cards are an especially appropriate way to honor a loved one while helping needy families in Marshfield. Bound in attractive blue leather-like folders, cards can be purchased at the Clothing Bank. They can memorialize the passing a a good friend or colleague, or they can honor and celebrate friendship or achievement. Please stop by during Clothing Bank hours: Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 12 noon, or call us at (781) 837.3337 for more information. The names of deceased friends who are memorialized by donations to Sowing Seeds are listed in our newsletter. Photos of the cards will be posted shortly on this website.

Sowing Seeds is busier than ever

For many people summertime offers relief from some responsibilities and stresses. Schedules are relaxed as children break from school and parents reduce their workloads. Unfortunately, other families experience increased struggles, as school lunches are not available, and parents are taxed to find affordable child care options.

This year Sowing Seeds has seen a dramatic increase in the number of individuals and familiies contacting us for help. We’ve never been this busy before. All of our services are greatly tapped, as we remain committed to helping our neighbors in need.

If you have a trade or professional skill, few dollars or a few hours to spare, please consider contacting us to see how you can help us to help our neighbors.
