Santa will help us collect coats
Dec/03/09 00:50
Santa Claus is coming to Marshfield and helping us to collect warm coats, blankets, gift cards and packages of new underwear. The Marshfield Chamber of Commerce has been busy planning the Holiday Festival of Lights for Sunday, December 6, downtown (Shaw's parking lot, near Papa Gino's and the Post Office.) Sowing Seeds volunteers will be there from 1:00 to 4:30 pm. Hope to see you there.
Santa also will be there with holiday carolers strolling around the square, pony rides, a model train set, a trackless train, face painting a kid's DJ, kids prizes and a jingle bell pass, high school carolers and more. Yes, it's free!
Thanks, Chamber, it sounds like fun! Thanks also for providing an opportunity for Sowing Seeds and the Food Pantry to help our neighbors this winter. The Food Pantry will be collecting unexpired cans of food. Sowing Seeds will be accepting warm coats (in new or nearly new condition), blankets, gift certificates to local merchants, and packages of new underwear to distribute to Marshfield's neediest families. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to share some basics and some holiday cheer.
Thank you all for your continued interest and support.

Wow! Thank you, Friends!
Nov/15/09 21:49
WOW! Hats off to the Friends of Sowing Seeds! What a great event they planned and hosted tonight. Thanks also to the Marshfield Country Club for their help in the planning and hosting of this Fashion Show. This team of "Friends" volunteers did more than raise money for Sowing Seeds. They raised awareness and our spirits.
Thanks also to the models, the vendors, shopkeepers and stores that provided the clothing, floral, hair and makeup stylists, the many contributors of the silent auction items and the live auction items. Several volunteers also enlisted the time of helpful spouses. This was a huge undertaking, pulled off with such grace!
Tonight's event would not have been successful if it weren't for the supporters, neighbors and contributors who showed up. Your presence fuels our commitment. Your bids and contributions will directly help Marshfield families struggling to get back on their feet. With your support we can help more people. Now even more families can and will get on their feet again.
A special thanks to the children who modeled. If the children didn't melt your heart you probably were out of the room when they entered. They couldn't have been more adorable. They represented what we wish for every family in town: to be well loved, well fed, well clothed and well cared for.
Thank you, Friends, for your hard work, great publicity, great fund raising and great spirit. You've infused us with an even greater commitment to help our neighbors in need. We are deeply grateful to the Friends’ Fashion Show committee: Fashion Show Co-Chair Ellen Goldenson, Fashion Show Co-Chair Jacqueline Egan, Donna Adams, Donna Brown, Tricia Bethay, Kristin Egan Dewey, Gail Dwyer, Ellen House, Kim Kulp, Lorraine Rayberg, and Carol Yaroschouk.
Last, but not least, a heartfelt thanks to the emcee and WDHD reporter, Linda Ergas. Boy or girl, her baby is going to have a tough act to follow! Linda did a spectacular job emceeing the Fashion Show and live auction. Thanks for contributing your time and talent to our cause, Linda. Welcome to Sowing Seeds!
Hats off to you all!
Of course, the night should not pass without another nod of thanks to our committed volunteers who help our neighbors all year 'round. Without them we have no Sowing Seeds. Without them many more families would still be struggling and alone in their challenges. The volunteers who give their time and talents are the backbone of Sowing Seeds. Another thanks to you tonight, good friends.

A Warm Coat and a Blankie
Nov/11/09 20:50
Brrr.. It's chilly out! In many homes it’s also chilly in.
The Sowing Seeds board met this week. Hearing that the recession is ending brings us some hope. Our educated guess is that the recovery hasn’t reached Marshfield: We’re still seeing longer lines and longer lists of people looking for our assistance. Blankets and warm coats would be greatly appreciated. If you know of anyone who has extra blankets in nearly new condition please suggest Sowing Seeds to them. We are expecting an unusually strong demand for them.
Coats, hats, gloves and mittens also would be greatly appreciated. The warmer the better. We serve all ages, genders and sizes. We even know of one Sowing Seeds volunteer whose long johns are on, and there to stay until Memorial Day!
We hope this winter is kind to you.

A Good Start to the School Year
Sep/27/09 20:18
Due to the generosity and thoughtfulness of the people in town, many Marshfield children have headed back to school with updated clothing that fits them, new backpacks filled with new school supplies, and even some crayons and coloring books for our littlest residents. Hope is in the air!
Meanwhile, there’s still work to be done. Summer brought no let up in the numbers of people seeking our guidance and assistance. The recession may be nearing an end but a full recovery will take more time. We are currently in need of fall and winter clothing. Without extra storage, resources and more volunteers we cannot accept any spring or summer clothing right now. Yet, we’ll gladly accept seasonal items!
Store gift cards are a big help to us. They give us the flexibility of shopping for specific needs as they arise. Local merchants include Marshalls, Payless Shoes, Kohl’s and Stop & Shop. Basic needs don’t change much. If you’re shopping for new underwear or socks know that we’d appreciate your size, too. Our needs come in all sizes. Fortunately, so do our supporters and helpers!
Thanks for giving many kids the hope of a fresh start. Thank you for caring and sharing.

The Bare Necessities
Jun/10/09 12:05
Two regular groups met at Sowing Seeds this week: The Board of Directors and the Intake Committee. Sadly, none reported a let up in the number of local individuals and families really struggling through hard times. Although our services are vast, and our wish list for goods and staples is long, the greatest need we have right now is for packages of new underwear and new socks.
If you purchased a package of new underwear or a pair of socks in the wrong size, please consider donating them to Sowing Seeds this month. All sizes and genders are welcomed and urgently needed. Onesies, toddlers, kids, teens, women’s, men’s -- if you have them and they are new (packaged or tagged) -- we know families that can use them right now. The friends and supporters of Sowing Seeds have been extremely generous with their donations of other goods to Sowing Seeds. To date, however, underwear, has not been a highly donated item. Let’s show our neighbors in need that we care about their basic needs, and see how much brand new underwear we can get donated before July 4th.
In lieu of packages of new socks and new underwear, gift cards to local merchants (especially Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Kohl’s, Payless Shoes and Stop & Shop) are urgently needed and greatly appreciated.
Thanks for helping us with our neighbors’ bare necessities!

Color their world with hope
May/02/09 21:13
At Sowing Seeds we usually focus on meeting the most basic need of our neighbors. Basics needs come in many different colors.
When a Mom or Dad visits our Clothing Bank with children in tow, it’s helpful to have an activity to occupy our littlest visitors so that their parent can find appropriately sized clothing for the family.
Nothing seems to soothe a restless toddler’s or child’s energy like a new box of crayons and a new coloring book. We are currently seeking donations of small boxes of crayons and coloring books to give to the children who visit Sowing Seeds. In addition to helping the Moms who visit us these items will be a little boost for the small children who are already experiencing a lot of stress in their young lives. Let’s color their world with blue, green, yellow, magenta, joy and hope.
If you see crayons and coloring books on sale, please consider purchasing them and donating them to Sowing Seeds during regular Clothing Bank hours, Thursday and Satrudays, from 10 am to 12 noon. We are located at 974 Plain Street (Route 139), Marshfield, Massachusetts, 02050. (Please remember that is not our mailing address. We receive mail at PO Box 1001, Marshfield, MA 02050.)
Thank you for helping us help our neighbors!

Household Repairs and Small Projects
Mar/16/09 12:01
A group of Marshfield men is launching a home repair service for small household projects. The group has organized to help the homebound, disabled, elderly, chronically ill and working poor in our community. These volunteers will receive qualified referrals from Sowing Seeds and the Marshfield Council on Aging. If you would like to volunteer, or if you need assistance with a household project, call Sowing Seeds at (781) 837.3337, or call the Marshfield Council on Aging at (781) 834.5581.

The economic downturn has greatly impacted many Marshfield families
Jan/15/09 06:21
When the Board of Directors for Sowing Seeds met this week it came as no surprise: Sowing Seeds has never been busier. Each month the Clothing Bank serves approximately 250 Marshfield families. Not only do the visiting families receive clothing, but also year ‘round assistance with back-to-school needs, budgetary guidance, compassionate listening and resource referrals. Reports from transportation co-ordinators and other intake volunteers show significantly greater demand for Sowing Seeds’ diverse services.
Sowing Seeds consists solely of volunteers and operates with private, local donations. If you’d like to give us a hand please write to PO Box 1001, Marshfield, MA 02050 or call: (781) 837.3337. A volunteer will return your call.
Currently, Sowing Seeds has a great demand for volunteer drivers who are willing to transport a neighbor to a Boston medical appointment.
Likewise, if you are a Marshfield resident and need a hand: You are not alone. Please call us. A volunteer will get back to you.

Basics needed: coats, blankets, hats, gloves, packages of new socks and new underwear
Nov/21/08 15:23
Sowing Seeds has a shortage of coats this year. The Clothing Bank at Sowing Seeds serves residents of Marshfield. Located at 974 Plain Street, the Clothing Bank is in the building that used to be the First Baptist Church. (It's at the corner of School Street and Rte. 139.)
New and nearly new clothing is distributed to individuals and families needing a helping hand. The hours are usually 10 am to 12 noon on Thursday and Saturday mornings. The volunteers are busier than ever. The need within Marshfield has never been this great since Sowing Seeds formed 15 years ago.
Thanks for considering your neighbors and passing along your gently used clothing. Packages of new socks and new underwear are also needed, as well as gift certificates to local discount stores (especially Marshalls, Kohl's and Payless Shoes), gas cards, and other staple goods. Hats, gloves, mittens and blankets are also needed.
Please note: If you want your donated clothing to be used locally, please do not place it in the bins by Sowing Seeds. Only clothing that is delivered to a volunteer during Clothing Bank hours is accepted for local use. Unfortunately, clothing that is left outside the door cannot be considered for Sowing Seeds to use. Please bring clean, wearable clothing to the volunteers during operating hours noted above.
Call 781.837.3337 if you need a hand, or if you can donate your time, treasure or talent. A volunteer will return your call.
Marshfield residents have been very supportive of one another. We trust the community will continue to help one another through these economically tough days. Let's hope there is less local need next year at this time. Meanwhile, many quiet miracles are worked here, week in and week out.

Back-to-school needs
Aug/31/08 21:47
As Marshfield parents and children prepare for another school year they face tremendous financial strain. Back-to-school clothing, escalated food costs and elevated fuel prices are just a few of the factors adding to budgetary stress. Historically, Marshfield residents have been very generous in helping several of our neighbors in need at the beginning of the school year. This fall there are many more children in need of our assistance, and we have never seen a level of need here that is this great.
Backpacks, pens, pencils, notebooks, paper and crayons are among the many items our children require. (Specific lists of other items may also be available on each Marshfield school’s website.) In addition to school supplies our Clothing Bank also distributes back-to-shool clothing. Packages of new underwear and gift certificates to local stores, including Marshalls, Kohl’s and Payless Shoes, are always in short supply.
Your charitable donations can be delivered on Thursday and Saturday mornings, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, or mailed to us at: Sowing Seeds, PO Box 1001, Marshfield, MA 02050.

Your donated clothing is put right to use
Aug/01/08 11:54
When you donate your in-season, gently worn clothing to us, your clothes are passed along to a local family in need.
At Sowing Seeds our volunteers carefully examine the clothing that is dropped off inside our building to see if it is in wearable condition. Each item is assessed: Is it something we would wear? Is it something we would give to a family member or friend to wear? If so, it is sorted by gender and size, and then displayed in our boutique-like setting, and given to a qualified local family in need. If not, we pass it along to other larger, regional non-profits to distribute in some fashion.
The primary goal of Sowing Seeds is to help local families get on their feet again. No one at Sowing Seeds earns a single cent. Your clothing doesn’t travel to reach its destination. It’s used right here, right now, by people who have a real and present need for clothing.
Donations of seasonal, laundered clothing, in new or nearly new condition can be delivered to our building on Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 12 noon. (Try to deliver before 11:4 5a.m. if you can.) Be sure to bring your clothing inside the building. Due to space constraints we cannot accept out-of-season clothing.
We can always use gift certificates to local merchants such as Marshall’s, Payless Shoes and Stop and Shop. We have a constant need for packages of new socks and underwear.
Our reward is knowing we have clad a local family, and that in the summer they have t-shirts, shorts, pants and sneakers, and during our winters their heads, bodies, hands and feet are kept warm and dry. They depend upon all of us to help them help themselves.
Thanks for helping your neighbors and community. If you are in need of clothing, please stop by and speak with one of our volunteers during Clothing Bank hours. We are happy to discreetly help you.

Sowing Seeds is busier than ever
Jul/09/08 21:57
For many people summertime offers relief from some responsibilities and stresses. Schedules are relaxed as children break from school and parents reduce their workloads. Unfortunately, other families experience increased struggles, as school lunches are not available, and parents are taxed to find affordable child care options.
This year Sowing Seeds has seen a dramatic increase in the number of individuals and familiies contacting us for help. We’ve never been this busy before. All of our services are greatly tapped, as we remain committed to helping our neighbors in need.
If you have a trade or professional skill, few dollars or a few hours to spare, please consider contacting us to see how you can help us to help our neighbors.
